On the margins of the 49th session of the Human Rights Council, CTI is organising an online side-event on “Preventing and investigating torture and other ill-treatment: The role of lawyers, doctors and judges”.
Building on CTI’s previous work on supporting States in the implementation of safeguards to prevent torture and other ill-treatment, the side-event aims to:
- Exchange on good State practices, experiences and challenges in preventing and documenting torture and other ill-treatment, especially in the first hours and initial period of detention, focusing on the indispensable role that lawyers, doctors and judges play in such efforts;
- Foster inter-regional and cross-regional experience-sharing on good practices and ways of overcoming obstacles in torture prevention through the lens of the legal and medical profession.
