Empowering States to address torture: HRC60 LDCs/SIDS Trust Fund briefing

The Convention against Torture Initiative (CTI) hosted a briefing today for seven delegates from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), held on the sidelines of the 60th Session of the Human Rights Council (08 September- 08 October 2025).

Delegates from Bangladesh, Burundi, Cabo Verde, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Dominican Republic, Fiji, The Gambia, Malawi and the Maldives attended the session as beneficiaries of the OHCHR’s LDCs/SIDS Trust Fund.

CTI hosted a briefing for seven delegates from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), held on the sidelines of the 60th Session of the Human Rights Council (08 September- 08 October 2025).

The briefing highlighted the availability of tailored support offered by CTI to States working toward ratification and effective implementation of the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT).

During the session, representatives exchanged on their countries’ experience in joining and implementing the Convention, sharing insights into advances made and good practices adopted since ratifying the Convention. The discussion emphasised the importance of peer-learning and international cooperation to help States overcome challenges in ratifying or implementing the Convention. 

CTI reaffirmed its readiness to provide technical and strategic assistance to States and encouraged enhanced dialogue and collaboration among LDCs and SIDS to overcome common challenges in aligning national frameworks with international human rights obligations.
