What we do

Bilateral diplomatic engagement

We provide one-to-one confidential dialogue and advice for States facing barriers to ratification or implementation of the Convention. We work with States in a variety of ways, including making diplomatic country visits and hosting study visits for State representatives to Geneva. We offer tailored advice and support according to need, such as assistance with legislative reviews, preparation of cabinet papers or building the “business case” for ratification.

Capacity building and technical support

Through events such as workshops and conferences, we facilitate the sharing of evidence-based recommendations, expert advice and best practices covering areas from drafting legislation and reporting to policing techniques and institutional reform. We also develop publications and training tools, compiling and translating practical examples of States’ experiences in torture prevention.

We engage and participate regularly in activities of the UN Human Rights Council, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, UN anti-torture mechanisms and bodies in Geneva, Vienna and New York, as well as NGOs and think tanks. We make statements, participate in and host events to promote inter-State cooperation in the global effort to eradicate torture and ill-treatment.

What we don’t do

Our support activities are rather tailored to the individual needs of States and based in reality, not theoretical principles.
